Super Are Super Good

A few months ago the company that I work for downsized from a 35,000 sf factory/warehouse to one half the size. During this move, beautiful industrial fixtures were thrown out.. these steel, hand welded tables that once assisted sewers were part of the purge. I rescued them. I envisioned replacing their old, plywood tops with fine wood to add an element of luxury to their simple, utilitarian design.

Summerlong Charge Part 2

Cantaloupe & Almond Gazpacho

1/2 cup almonds plus sliced almonds for garnish
1 cantaloupe, seeds discarded
2 tablespoons honey
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
almond extract for additional flavor (I added 2 tsp)
lime slices for garnish

In a shallow baking pan toast the unblanched almonds in the middle of a preheated 350°F. oven for 5 to 8 minutes, or until they are aromatic, and transfer them to a blender. Add 1 1/2 cups water and blend the mixture until the almonds are ground fine. Strain the mixture through a fine sieve set over a bowl, pressing hard on the solids, discard the solids, and return the almond milk to the blender, cleaned. Add the cantaloupe, the honey, the lime juice, and a pinch of salt and blend the mixture until it is smooth. Taste, add almond extract for additional flavor, if necessary. Transfer the soup to a bowl and chill it for 1 hour, or until it is cold. Divide the soup among chilled bowls, and garnish it with the sliced almonds and very thin lime slices.

Serves: 5 1/2 cups, 4 - 6 servings

Served with chicken ceasar salad and paired with Abita Purple Haze.. pretty perfect summer lunch.

Summerlong Charge

This weekend we celebrated our friend Joanna's birthday with a picnic at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park. Although considered one of the most amazing American abandonments, the grounds are maintained and guests are welcomed to picnic alongside the original wild animal caves and cages.

Knowing that Joanna and her husband Darryl love grapefruit, we infused vodka with organic grapefruit & mint picked from our yard. We used a beautiful, old glass jar picked up at the PCC swap meet, half a bottle of vodka we had in the kitchen (its been a summer of Moscow Mules) and some gift wrapping supplies I keep on hand. Alex and I are experimenting with infusing vodka so let us know if you have any tips or favorite combinations.

Basketball Cow

This is what half a cow's-worth of basketball leather looks like (about 20 sq. ft.) when you receive it from the Horween tannery in Chicago.
The Horween Leather Company, founded in 1905, is one of the oldest, continuously-running tanneries in the United States. It is the only tannery still in Chicago, IL, a city which was once the home to a large number of tanneries. Horween, still a family-run business, is highly-regarded for its hand-crafted, top-quality leather products. Their leathers can be found in the workshops of some of the finest cobblers in the world, and on the official ball of the NFL.

I just received this side (half a hide) an hour ago. I'll be using it in a few projects and products I'm developing at the moment. Stay tuned...
