I love this type of exploration with metal especially when it becomes wearable... the re-use of both precious and common metal objects, like keys, and experimenting with oxidation... yummmm

Walter Leland Cronkite, Jr. (November 4, 1916 – July 17, 2009)

Like a lot of people, I'm saddened by the passing of Walter Cronkite. Some of my earliest memories of watching the news with my family are narrated by the sound of his voice.
Here's a great photo of Cronkite (wearing 10-eyelet RedWing boots, no less) taking a swing onNASA's Reduced Gravity Simulator in 1968. Awesome.

Regal Beagles Get Baked In LA

Jason (l) and Andrew Freeborn (r) visited LA last weekend. Mitzi and I got to catch up with them at Palermo's for dinner on Sunday. These two bronzed Adonises strolled in, exhausted from a long day baking under the sun at Zuma Beach. We're glad they made it.

Jason told us of the joys of elementary school summer vacation (he's a school teacher in Phila., PA), and Andrew gave us the awesome news that he and his wife, Rebecca, are expecting a baby boy. As the text message Andrew sent on Thursday morning proclaims, "The Freeborn name lives on!"

You can follow Jason (aka Andrew P. Warcraft) and Andrew (aka Billy Ray Valentine) and the rest of their crew's antics and ramblings at the very entertaining Regal Beagles blog.

When we were in Buenos Aires in May, we stayed in Recoleta about 5 blocks from the Biblioteca Nacional de la República Argentina. Getting to see this building in person was one of the highlights of our trip. Originally founded in 1810 and located in another part of town, the library is built on the site of Quinta Unzue, the palace of the Peron's during their terms in office. In 1952, Evita Peron died here and due to the government's concern that the home may become a shrine they had it demolished. The government decided to build the new library on the site but due to political upheaval, financial scandals and disagreements over the design, which were finalized in the 60s, it took 3 decades to finish the project. It's a quintessintial example of Brutalist architecture... which is a movement that flourished from the 50s through the mid 70s, spawned from the modernist architectural movement. The term was coined in 1954, from the French béton brut, or "raw concrete", a phrase used by Le Corbusier to describe his choice of material.

P = 2l + 2w = 2(l + w)

We came across this remodel (to say the least) a couple months ago. For me, it's perfection... basic, unadorned geometry integrated into nature, the enormous rocks, the re-use and preservation of the stone, all the concrete especially the inside counter tops, the small "just enough space" size and, needless to say, the location. I have just a few things to pay off this year and then it's all about saving for a house... this home inspires me to stay on track.

Architects: Alan Chu & Cristiano Kato
Location: Ilhabela, Sao Paulo, Brazil
Project year: 2008
Site area: 8,000 sqm (1.97 acres)
Constructed area: 36 sqm (387 sq ft)

Shock Jock

Just cant get enough of cosmic chaos and fantastic disasters these days... especially the work of Scandinavian Designer Karl Grandin, the artist responsible for creating the Cheap Monday skull and their wicked, psychedelic sci-fi prints. I like his style overall, though, like the "Nightlife Owl" (above) he designed a couple years ago and had projected onto the side of the Stedelijk Museum/Post CS building in Amsterdam during the night of Art Beat, a popular art event held annually as a platform for non-museal art, street artists. My favorite though is "Shock of the New" (top two images) that was done for Cheap Monday's sub label, WKND.

BTW, did you know there is a Cheap Monday store in Chinatown (LA)? Yep... Choose Chinatown

It's Bliss!

Thank you Jen @ Buzzhype for reminding me how much I love Bliss Lau. A few years ago we were represented by the same showroom. She was just starting out, offering handbags only.. one of which I own and love. Her label has grown and evolved so nicely and I think she has a very original and interesting perspective on fashion. She chooses to explore a particular part of the body with each collection... belts came after bags and she has now taken her exploration further through jewelry... you see where this is going. Read more about her and see more of her work HERE

NEW MAZZY STAR!

But first, Hope Sandavol and the Warm Inventions will release their first album since 2001 entitled Through the Devil Softly. The track "Blanchard" is delicious and takes me right back to 10th grade when Mazzy Star's So Tonight That I Might See was the soundtrack to many make out sessions. Without a doubt, that album + Among My Swan are among my favorite albums and keep a spot on my iPod at all times. You can download "Blanchard", read about the upcoming tour and the near finalization of the next Mazzy Star album HERE

El Jato: Best Shrimp Tacos in LA!

4200 block of East Olympic, west of Atlantic (East LA)
*Parked there everyday 10:30-4pm

I was at the truck yesterday for lunch.. they also have a restaurant.. and I had the best shrimp tacos I've ever had! The truck only serves shrimp items.. tacos, tostadas, ceviche.. but the restaurant (which I havent been to yet) serves all types of seafood. I get to eat the best that East LA has to offer because I work in the area and these tacos were by far the best I've ever had. $3 will get you 2 awesomely delicious shrimp tacos and a Mexican soda... the tacos are $1 each! ...sweet dudes serving too!

That's whats up, ya'll.
